Sun Cut Flat
The name Sun Cut Flat comes from a lyric in the Bob Dylan song “Mama, You’ve Been On My Mind”, in which Dylan surmises that “perhaps it’s the color of the sun cut flat” that keeps his estranged lover in his thoughts. Far from being a folk band though, Sun Cut Flat conjures up an ethereal and ambient energy that has been described by Obscure Sound as “ocean-side fantasy-land soundscapes reminiscent of Air France and Gorillaz’ Plastic Beach, with unique touches ranging from soulful vocal samples to brass inclusions and Afro-pop wanderings. It all presents a fantastic stylistic hybrid, where lush synth-pop collides with the naturalism of Afro-pop and tropical funk to tout this landscape-shifting ability”.
Sun Cut Flat is a collaboration between twenty five year old Brooklyn residents Nick Lattanzi and Erik Kramer, who met in Boston while both at university. In recent live shows, the recording duo has grown to a dynamic band that includes fellow Berklee alums Angelo Spampinanto (of fellow Brooklyn bands Iris Lune and Evolfo), Ricky Petraglia (of Carbon Mirage), and acclaimed guitarist / songwriter Bobby Wesley, and Trumpet player / beat producer Noah Frank A.K.A DJ Herb'n. Sun Cut Flat’s eclectic sound has evolved through many different iterations through the years, starting from something like folk rock and moving towards electronic with traces of hip hop, synth-pop and soul. Some influences and inspiration cited are Gorillaz, Little Dragon, Radiohead, Future Islands, Gnarles Barkley, Beck and many others. In late 2014 Sun Cut Flat released “Copy Machine Dream”, an LP that featured 14 home recorded tracks ranging from the gritty trip-hop sound of “Stage Fright”, to the ambient/tropical rhythms of “Love In Spiritual”, “I Will Always”, and “Blank Soul”, to the hard hitting 808’s and fat basslines of “Happiness Is A Wandering”, “Sexy Feel”, “Run, Rabbit Moon”, and “#66 Bus Blues”.
